![]() Rating:4.5 out of 5 Overall ImpressionĮngaging characters, better than average art, a decent music score, and an addictive battle system really let this one shine out from the rest in the pack. It’s a creative and fun diversion from your normal visual novel. You can capture enemy commanders as well as kill them causing them to be absent from the rest of the game, but be warned that the same thing can happen to yours as well. The difficulty from battle to battle can vary greatly from easy to hard and even impossible. While it is a fun battle system, there were plenty of times where I wanted to pull my hair out due to the enemies having such a broken advantage over my own army. While there is another way to win these battles, We found that just killing them all was an easier task. The main point of each battle is generally trying to kill all of the opposing armies troops. There are different troop types each with their own unique fighting styles and special abilities. While it’s straightforward it does contain a good amount of strategy to get past some of the later fights. Unlike most visual novels, Sengoku Rance involves a lot of battling and even made up its own system. ![]() We tend to think it gets repetitive after playing for so long and found myself muting it and just listening to my own library, but it never got overly annoying. On its own the music doesn’t really hold a candle to other visual novels out there, but it’s what the game needed and is always better than nothing. If something silly is going on the music is also silly, if there’s something bad happening the music compliments that too. It’s rather fitting of the game style and every scenes tune goes well with the mood. We personally found the music to be engaging. Nothing seems out of proportion or odd the whole way through. No one looks out of place and never seems like they wouldn’t belong, save for a unique few as well. The designs are well suited to this “alternative” time period, though some are more unique than others, and portray each character rightfully. Characters are creative and never boring. The art in Sengoku Rance is nice to look at and everything from the character designs to the background and even the UI itself is well thought out and really shows that the creators had fun creating everything in this world. More then anything though, it is just a silly game, a fun diversion from the run of the mill “Soap Opera” story lines. They could have done a lot more for the story, But it is a Rance game. There are holes in the story, and sometimes you do feel like they just came up short. All in all, Sengoku Rance has enough content in its story to keep you reading and playing it till the end. Each ending is entertaining in its own right and I found all of them to be enjoyable, even if Kenshin’s route was my favorite out of them all. There are multiple endings to this game, but they can only be unlocked once you get through the games true ending the first play through. Although filled with a lot of comedy, there are some really moving stories to certain characters such as a miko who’s lost her memory as a result of being tied to the all powerful god resting underneath Japan. The story takes place during the 4th Sengoku (warring states) era of Japan, an area of the Rance World which parodies medieval real-world Japan.
